Wellness Vaccine Protocols

Clarkesville Veterinary Hospital has tailored vaccine protocols to fit your horses' exact situation!


Core Vaccines:

This is for most horses. Horses that are over 1 year old and have had vaccines before should receive this protocol.

Equine Core Vaccines (Yearly, before mosquitoes hatch in spring):

  • Eastern and Western Encephalomyelitis Tetanus (EWT) and West Nile
    1. West Nile to booster every 6 months if mosquitoes still prevalent
  • Rabies

  • At Risk Vaccines:

  • Flu/Rhino - Administer if horse travels frequently or is stabled with horses that travel frequently. Booster every 6 months
  • Strangles - Administer if horse is traveling to an at risk area, or known outbreak. Booster every 6-12 months


  • Broodmare Vaccine Recommendations:

  • Administer Equine Core Vaccines (see above) approximately 4-6 weeks before foaling
  • Flu/Rhino approximately 4-6 weeks before foaling
  • Equine Herpesvirus (EHV) to be administered at 5, 7, and 9 months of gestation

    Congratulations on your new addition! Clarkesville Veterinary Hospital has two vaccine protocols for foals, depending on their mother's vaccine history.

    FOALS - Born to Vaccinated Mares:

  • Eastern and Western Encephalomyelitis Tetanus (EWT) and West Nile
    1. 1. 3-6 months of age
    2. 2. 3-4 weeks after first booster
    3. 3. 10-12 months of age

  • Rabies
    1. 1. 6 months of age
    2. 2. 4-6 weeks after 1st booster

  • Flu/Rhino (if at risk, see "At Risk Vaccines" above for details)
    1. 1. 6 months of age
    2. 2. 3-4 weeks after 1st booster
    3. 3. 10-12 months of age


  • FOALS Born to Unvaccinated Mares:

  • Eastern and Western Encephalomyelitis Tetanus (EWT) and West Nile
    1. 1. 3-4 months of age
    2. 2. 4 weeks after first booster
    3. 3. 4 weeks after second booster

  • Rabies
    1. 1. 3-4 months of age
    2. 2. 4-6 weeks after 1st booster

  • Flu/Rhino (if at risk, see "At Risk Vaccines" above for details)
    1. 1. 6 months of age
    2. 2. 3-4 weeks after 1st booster
